The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a forecast of rain for Gauteng this week, with severe thunderstorms expected to impact the region. Warnings from the SA Weather Service include a level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms across various provinces. Additionally, a yellow level 4 warning for storms has been issued for the eastern parts of Free State, northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, and the escarpment areas of Mpumalanga. Heavy rain, lightning, hail, and damaging winds are likely in these warned areas.
In Gauteng, the weather is expected to be cloudy and cool to warm, with scattered showers and thundershowers anticipated throughout the week. The expected temperature range for Pretoria is 15/27°C, while Johannesburg is forecasted to experience temperatures between 14/25°C.
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi urged residents to exercise caution during this time, particularly in low-lying areas. Mulaudzi stated, “Our residents in our low-lying areas to continue to exercise caution, avoid crossing river streams and monitor young kids from going to river streams.”
Thobela added, “In Gauteng, we are still expecting a cloudy day into the afternoon, cool temperatures into the afternoon with scattered showers and rain still possible in the central and southern part of the province.”
The expected UVB sunburn index for Gauteng is classified as High, indicating that residents should also take precautions against sun exposure when conditions permit.
As the week progresses, residents are advised to stay informed about the weather updates and heed any warnings issued by local authorities. The situation remains dynamic, and details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the impact from the storms.
Officials are closely monitoring the weather patterns and will provide updates as necessary to ensure public safety during this period of adverse weather conditions.
