A pilots’ strike at Lufthansa entered its second day on April 14, 2026, significantly impacting air travel across Germany. The strike, called by the Vereinigung Cockpit union, has led to the cancellation of 550 flights in Frankfurt, over 300 in Munich, and around 40 in Berlin.
The immediate circumstances of the strike stem from months of stalled negotiations regarding pay and company pensions. On April 13 alone, 900 flights were canceled, with an additional 555 cancellations reported on April 14.
As the pilots continue their action, a separate two-day strike by cabin crew is set to begin at 12:01 a.m. on April 15, 2026. This upcoming strike will affect all core Lufthansa brand departures from Frankfurt and Munich, coinciding with the airline’s official centenary ceremony in Frankfurt.
In total, Lufthansa is expected to operate only about a third of its short-haul flights and roughly half of its long-haul services during this period of industrial action. Passengers affected by the disruptions may rebook free of charge to another Lufthansa Group flight until April 21, 2026.
Andreas Pinheiro, President of Vereinigung Cockpit, stated, “A strike is always the last resort to bring movement to failed negotiations.” Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Independent Flight Attendants’ Organization (UFO) expressed frustration, saying, “Over the past few months, the employers have made it clear that they are unwilling to adequately address our demands and are stalling.”
UFO leader Joachim Vazquez Buerger emphasized the significance of the timing, asserting, “When management joins forces with politicians to celebrate 100 years of Lufthansa, we will make it clear right there under what conditions the employer operates.”
Lufthansa has publicly expressed regret over the disruptions, thanking passengers for their understanding amidst the ongoing strikes. The airline is working to mitigate the impact of the strikes while negotiations continue.
The situation remains fluid as both pilots and cabin crew prepare for their respective strikes, and further updates are anticipated as the events unfold.
