hantavirus outbreak cruise ship — ZA news

A hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship has led to multiple deaths and critical illness, raising concerns about public health safety. A British national is in a Johannesburg hospital after contracting hantavirus aboard the ship, which has already claimed three lives.

The first case involved a 70-year-old male passenger who fell ill unexpectedly while the ship was traveling from Ushuaia to St Helena Island. His wife, a 69-year-old woman, also became ill and died shortly after.

South African health authorities confirmed that the British man is in critical condition in isolation but receiving medical attention. Authorities are tracing anyone who may have come into contact with infected passengers.

The patient developed symptoms including fever, headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhea before dying upon arrival at St Helena. The causes of the deaths of the other passengers are being investigated.

Oceanwide Expeditions is attempting to arrange the repatriation of two crew members showing symptoms of the disease. Foster Mohale from the South African Department of Health stated, “Despite medical treatment provided to him at Ascension, his condition did not improve and necessitated his medical evacuation to a South African private health facility in Sandton for further medical management.”

Health officials emphasize that there is no need for public panic because only two patients from the cruise ship have been within South Africa’s borders. Hantavirus is a rare but potentially deadly virus transmitted primarily by rodents.
