Corruption: South Africa’s Fight Against

corruption — ZA news

The South African government is ramping up its efforts to combat corruption within the Department of Home Affairs, leading to a significant number of arrests and dismissals. Since July 2024, the department has recorded 63 dismissals and multiple arrests related to corruption.

Key incidents:

  • Pule Mabe and three others are facing fraud, theft, and money laundering charges in court.
  • A Pinetown official was arrested for attempting to bribe an investigator with R3,000.
  • The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has made 275 criminal referrals targeting both applicants and implicated officials.

The SIU is investigating the issuance of permanent residence permits and visas. Their findings reveal collusion between officials and foreign nationals. They have referred 99 cases involving foreign nationals who fraudulently obtained visas for administrative action.

Leon Schreiber stated, “The pace of disciplinary steps, dismissals and arrests within Home Affairs continues to quicken.” The department’s crackdown aims to restore integrity in public service.

Additionally, the Working On Infrastructure pilot project seeks to eradicate corruption within the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). Dean Macpherson noted that this initiative differs from previous ones because it provides lasting support for participants.

As investigations continue, officials have not disclosed a timeline for resolving these cases. The South African government remains committed to addressing corruption at all levels.
