XChat, a standalone messaging app developed by Elon Musk’s social media company X, is set to launch on April 17, 2026. The app aims to provide users with a secure platform for managing chat conversations, voice, and video calls across multiple devices.
One of the key features of XChat is its emphasis on privacy, utilizing end-to-end encryption to ensure that only the sender and recipient can access their messages. Additionally, users will have the ability to edit or delete sent messages for all participants in the conversation, enhancing control over shared content.
To further protect user privacy, XChat includes features designed to prevent information leakage, such as blocking screenshots and offering disappearing messages that last for up to five minutes. The app supports group chats with a maximum of 481 members, catering to larger conversations.
Unlike many other messaging platforms, XChat will not include advertisements or tracking, positioning itself as a privacy-centric alternative in a crowded market. “The app emphasizes privacy and security. It will not include ads or tracking, and all messages will be end-to-end encrypted,” a company representative stated.
XChat has been in testing since 2025, following Musk’s announcement in mid-2025 about launching a new version of the platform’s direct messaging service. This development is seen as a significant step in reshaping how users of X (formerly Twitter) communicate.
Users can pre-order the app for iPhone and iPad, signaling a strong interest in the new platform. The promises made by Musk regarding a transformative communication experience are now taking tangible form, as the app prepares for its debut in the app store.
As the launch date approaches, observers are keen to see how XChat will perform against established competitors like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional features that may be introduced before the official release.
