The National Student Financial Aid Scheme has been placed under administration due to severe governance and financial issues, marking a significant intervention in South Africa’s higher education funding system. Professor Hlengani Mathebula has been appointed as the administrator.
The intervention was prompted by governance failures, board resignations, and financial irregularities. The NSFAS board has been dissolved, and the administrator’s mandate includes stabilisation, accountability, and operational continuity.
Buti Manamela emphasized the importance of NSFAS, stating, “NSFAS is not merely an administrative entity but a critical instrument in South Africa’s democratic project.” He assured that “student funding will continue,” alleviating concerns about disruptions in student allowances.
This decision follows a long process of legal assessment and government intervention. The NSFAS has faced prolonged instability and governance concerns over the past few years.
The intervention is temporary but necessary. Observers expect that it will lead to improved management of public funds dedicated to student funding.
