The rise of sophisticated immigration scams has left many vulnerable individuals, like Patricia, facing significant financial losses while navigating the complex immigration system. Patricia lost approximately $16,000 to scams while seeking asylum. She said, “I felt so bad and disappointed.”

In 2023, immigration scams targeting individuals seeking legal help surged, aided by new technologies. The state attorney general’s office received about 240 complaints related to immigration service providers since January 2025. Nationwide complaints of immigration fraud nearly doubled after the 2024 presidential election.

Key statistics:

  • Patricia lost $16,000 to immigration scams.
  • The state attorney general’s office received 240 complaints since January 2025.
  • Complaints filed with the Federal Trade Commission regarding immigration fraud reached 2,000 last year.

The Deportation Data Project was founded to track the impact of federal immigration enforcement operations. It aims to provide real-time data on changes in immigration enforcement. Melanie Zamenhof noted that the increase in scams “just speaks to the desperation of people.”

USCIS spokesman Zach Kahler stated, “We are declaring an all-out war on immigration fraud in all forms.” As legal services become more critical for those seeking asylum applications, awareness of these scams is essential for protecting vulnerable populations.
