The sudden shutdown of Spirit Airlines has left many travelers scrambling for alternative flights, significantly disrupting travel plans at Orlando International Airport. The airline ceased operations early Saturday morning, canceling dozens of flights to and from the airport.
Spirit Airlines had been facing financial difficulties leading to its second bankruptcy. The company struggled with a significant increase in jet fuel prices, which further strained its operations. For 33 years, Spirit Airlines operated out of Orlando International Airport.
At the time of its closure, the airline had approximately 160 employees based at the airport. Last month, Spirit carried nearly 500,000 passengers through Orlando. It operated a total of 237 flights to 46 destinations from this hub.
Families had to scramble to find alternative flights after Spirit Airlines canceled their travel plans. The airline’s counter at the airport was described as a ghost town following the shutdown. One unnamed passenger expressed their distress: “It was very emotional. It was very sad. We didn’t know what to do.” Another passenger noted the impact on affordability, stating, “People lose their job…but also Spirit was an affordable airline compared to all the other ones that are out there now.”
The future remains uncertain for both affected passengers and employees. No timeline has been shared regarding potential re-employment opportunities or assistance for those impacted by the shutdown.
