Delta Air Lines is eliminating food and beverage service on hundreds of short flights starting May 19, 2026. This decision is part of cost-cutting measures amid rising fuel prices. The changes will affect around 450 daily flights.

Flights under 349 miles will no longer offer in-flight service. Passengers traveling on flights 350 miles and above will still receive full beverage and snack service. Delta has not provided food or drink on flights under 250 miles since 2015.

Delta operates approximately 5,500 flights each day. About 9% of these flights cover distances of less than 350 miles. The airline aims to reduce costs as fuel prices reach record highs.

The changes follow a trend in the airline industry where companies are adjusting services to manage expenses. Delta raised its hold baggage fees in April 2026 to address higher fuel costs. The company continues to offer full service in Delta First class on all flights.

A Delta spokesperson stated, “Beginning May 19, Delta is adjusting onboard beverage service to create a more consistent experience across our network.” They added that even without beverage service, crews will remain visible and focused on customer care.

The announcement comes as the airline industry faces challenges following the collapse of Spirit Airlines, highlighting ongoing market pressures. Passengers may experience significant changes in their travel experience as airlines adapt to economic conditions.
