Chery is set to make a significant impact in the automotive market with the launch of its new double-cab bakkie, codenamed ‘KP31’. This model will debut in South Africa in 2026. It features a world-first plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain, which positions it uniquely within the growing segment of hybrid vehicles.
The KP31 measures 5,450 mm in length and 1,920 mm in width. Chery representatives confirmed that they are ‘pushing hard’ to bring this model to market.
In addition to the KP31, Chery plans to introduce the Q all-electric city car and the Tiggo V SUV in South Africa. These launches reflect Chery’s commitment to expanding its lineup of electric vehicles.
Meanwhile, Chery is experiencing notable success in Israel. The company launched the Tiggo 7 HEV, a compact crossover SUV, which boasts a combined power of 246 horsepower. This model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.7 seconds.
In the first quarter of 2026, Chery emerged as the best-selling brand in Israel. The Israel Vehicle Importers Association reported that Chery sold a total of 21,521 cars across its eleven models during this period.
This achievement is impressive, especially considering that Chinese automakers delivered a total of 39,127 cars in Israel during the same timeframe. South Korean and Japanese automakers trailed with deliveries of 17,828 and 10,630 cars respectively.
Chery’s rapid growth can be attributed to its strategic focus on hybrid and electric vehicles. The KP31’s innovative design could further enhance its appeal among environmentally conscious consumers.
Yet, there are challenges ahead. The KP31 is currently undergoing adjustments to meet regulatory requirements and local market preferences. Yin Tongyue, a representative from Chery, stated that these modifications are essential for successful integration into various regions.
As Chery prepares for these launches, it aims to solidify its position as a leader in both the South African and Israeli automotive markets. Its dual focus on hybrid technology and robust sales strategies could redefine consumer choices moving forward.
With these developments on the horizon, Chery’s future looks promising as it continues to innovate within the automotive landscape.
