On August 19, 2024, the Bayesian superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily, resulting in the deaths of seven people, including Mike Lynch and his daughter. Investigators determined that crew negligence and improper actions led to the tragedy, not a storm as initially believed.
The yacht was carrying 22 people when it encountered severe weather. Reports indicate it was struck by a mesocyclone—a powerful rotating thunderstorm. At the time of the incident, wind speeds reached 63.4 knots (73.0 mph), which were sufficient to overturn the vessel.
The sinking occurred within approximately 16 minutes, allowing some passengers to escape. Unfortunately, seven lives were lost in the disaster. Mike Lynch was celebrating his acquittal in a fraud case during this ill-fated trip.
Investigators from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch revealed that vulnerabilities in the yacht’s stability were not identified in its safety documentation. The yacht’s builders had previously claimed it was “unsinkable.” Yet, their assertions did not hold up under scrutiny.
Prosecutors are now considering charges of negligent shipwreck and multiple counts of manslaughter against the yacht’s captain and crew. The investigation has been ongoing for nearly two years.
In addition to the legal ramifications for those involved, the yacht’s manufacturer has filed a lawsuit against Lynch’s widow for £400 million, citing losses incurred from the disaster.
The recovery of the yacht took place ten months later, in June 2025. This maritime accident highlights critical issues surrounding crew negligence and maritime safety protocols that need addressing to prevent future tragedies.
