Johannesburg Emergency Services are on high alert as severe weather conditions threaten the city over the long weekend. The South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms. Rainfall may reach up to 24mm in some areas, increasing the risk of localised flooding.
Temperatures will drop significantly. Daytime highs are expected to be in the mid-teens, while overnight temperatures could fall to single digits. Residents in low-lying areas should stay away from rivers and streams.
Motorists are advised to drive cautiously and avoid flooded roads. Robert Mulaudzi from Johannesburg Emergency Services stated, “We are on high alert throughout this long weekend to ensure that we can be able to respond to any water-related or fire emergencies which might occur throughout this long weekend.”
Safety recommendations:
- Call emergency management services at 011-375-5911 for life-threatening emergencies.
- Seek shelter if thunder follows lightning within 30 seconds.
- Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder.
The risk of lightning remains high during thunderstorms in Gauteng. A 30 percent chance of showers is also forecasted along the southwest coast. Emergency management teams continue preparations for potential emergencies due to these severe weather conditions.
