Ghana has appointed Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars, following the departure of Otto Addo earlier this month. The Ghana Football Association confirmed this development on Monday, just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz, who has extensive World Cup experience, has previously coached South Africa, Portugal, and Iran in four World Cup tournaments. His immediate task will be to prepare the Black Stars for their World Cup campaign, which begins against Panama on June 17, 2026.
The Ghana Football Association stated, “The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, working with all key stakeholders, has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.” This appointment comes at a critical time, as Ghana was left without a coach just over two months before the tournament.
Ghana has a storied history in the World Cup, having reached the quarter-finals in 2010, which was the best performance by an African team at that time. The team has been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, making their preparation under Queiroz even more crucial.
In his previous World Cup appearances, Queiroz’s teams have recorded three wins in 13 matches, a statistic that will be under scrutiny as he takes on this new role. The Ghana Football Association emphasized that Coach Queiroz begins work immediately to prepare the Black Stars for the tournament, which kicks off on June 11, 2026.
As the football community watches closely, observers are eager to see how Queiroz will shape the team’s strategy and performance in the lead-up to the World Cup.
