The Geely E2 has launched in South Africa, becoming the most affordable EV in the country. This introduction comes at a time when the demand for electric vehicles is on the rise, driven by increasing environmental awareness and government incentives aimed at promoting cleaner transportation options.
The E2 is available in two trim grades: Aspire and Apex, with the Aspire model priced from R339,900 and the Apex from R389,900. The vehicle features an electric motor that produces 85 kW of power and 150 N.m of torque, making it suitable for urban commuting and daily use. It is powered by a 39.4 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which supports a claimed operating range of up to 325 km (WLTP) when fully charged.
In terms of efficiency, the E2 has an energy consumption rate of 15.2 kWh/100 km, which positions it favorably among its competitors in the growing EV market. The vehicle’s dimensions are also noteworthy, measuring 4,135 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, and 1,580 mm in height, providing ample space for passengers and cargo. The boot capacity is 375 litres, which can be expanded to 1,320 litres with the rear seats folded down.
Geely’s commitment to customer satisfaction is evident in the warranties offered with the E2, which include a four-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty and an eight-year/200,000 km battery warranty. Additionally, the E2 comes with a wallbox home charger as standard, facilitating convenient charging for owners.
Jateen Daya, a spokesperson for Geely, stated, “The E2 represents a new approach to accessible electric mobility.” He further emphasized that the vehicle “delivers the space, technology, design and everyday usability expected from a sophisticated hatchback.” This statement highlights Geely’s intention to cater to a broader audience by making electric mobility more attainable.
Currently, Geely operates 32 dealerships in South Africa, with plans to expand to 40 by the end of 2026. This expansion is expected to enhance the availability of the E2 and other models, making it easier for consumers to access electric vehicles.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the introduction of the Geely E2 is seen as a significant step towards promoting electric vehicles in South Africa. Observers anticipate that this move will encourage other manufacturers to explore affordable EV options, further stimulating competition and innovation in the market.
