Severe weather warnings have prompted school closures across the Eden and Central Karoo districts on May 6 and 7, 2026. Authorities are preparing for flooding and dangerous conditions in the region.
An Orange Level 8 warning for disruptive rain has been issued for the eastern parts of the Garden Route and Eden District. Heavy rainfall is expected to cause widespread flooding, along with dangerous driving conditions.
The closures will affect public ordinary and special needs schools in specific circuits of George, Knysna, and Oudtshoorn. The Western Cape Education Department is monitoring the situation closely to ensure schools can reopen safely.
Key details:
- Schools closed: May 6 and 7, 2026
- Orange Level 8 warning for disruptive rain
- Expected swells between 10 and 12 meters along the coast
- Circuits affected: 3 in George, 4 in Knysna, 5 in Oudtshoorn
David Maynier stated, “Our default position is always to keep schools open and only close schools in exceptional circumstances, but we are mindful of the severity of the warnings in place.” Residents are advised to stay away from rivers and avoid crossing flooded roads during the storm.
The storm system is linked to an intense cut-off low pressure system impacting both the Western Cape and Eastern Cape. Damaging winds and massive waves are also expected along the coast.
The Eastern Cape Department of Education has placed schools on high alert and suspended classes in several coastal municipalities. Emergency contact numbers have been provided for residents.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and follow official warnings during the peak of the storm. The expected reopening of schools is scheduled for May 8, 2026, unless further weather-related risks arise.
