Durban City FC achieved a historic milestone on May 2, 2026, by winning the Nedbank Cup, defeating TS Galaxy 2-1 at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. This victory marks the first time a team from KwaZulu Natal has lifted the trophy.
Durban City FC was promoted from the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the start of the 2024/25 season. The club changed its name from Maritzburg United to Durban City at that time.
Pitso Dladla, currently serving as interim head coach, emphasized the importance of this victory. He stated, “It was important to win the cup considering we had just relocated to Durban last season, when we were promoted.”
In their path to victory, Durban City FC previously defeated TS Galaxy twice earlier in the season with convincing 2-0 scores. The final match showcased their growth and determination.
Following their Nedbank Cup win, Durban City FC will participate in next season’s Caf Confederation Cup. Dladla noted that this achievement is crucial for establishing their identity: “This victory means a lot for us as a team … in terms of identity, in terms of growing the name Durban City.”
Gavin Hunt was initially the head coach at the start of the season but was fired in December. His departure set the stage for Dladla to lead the team to this significant triumph.
Durban City FC has a rich history, having won back-to-back league titles in 1982 and 1983. The club aims to build on this legacy with their recent success.
