A crocodile linked to a missing businessman was found with human remains and multiple pairs of footwear in its stomach on May 3, 2026, in the Komati River, Komatipoort, South Africa.
The crocodile, weighing approximately 500 kg, was euthanized after being tracked for four days. Human remains included two arms, part of a ribcage, and tissue from the chest. Additionally, multiple pairs of Crocs and flip-flops were found inside its stomach.
The crocodile is believed to be connected to the disappearance of a 59-year-old Gauteng businessman. His vehicle was located trapped at a low-lying bridge prior to his reported disappearance.
The South African Police Service conducted extensive studies on the behavior of crocodiles before initiating the recovery operation. This involved police divers, drones, and helicopters to monitor the area effectively.
Key findings from the recovery operation:
- A crocodile believed to have eaten a missing man was tracked for four days.
- Human remains discovered inside included two arms and part of a ribcage.
- Multiple pairs of footwear were also found in the crocodile’s stomach.
Captain Johan Potgieter commented on the situation: “We know from experience that if crocodiles have had a big meal, they’re not very active…” He acknowledged the dangers involved in the recovery operation, stating, “It was a dangerous thing. A lot of things could’ve gone wrong.”
Despite the tragic nature of these events, Potgieter emphasized the importance of closure for families involved. “Even though it is a tragedy, you have to get that closure so that people can carry on,” he said.
