Chery has confirmed that its new Q model will enter the South African market in 2026. This move targets the growing demand for affordable electric vehicles (EVs) in the region.
The Q will be built on a dedicated electric platform. It represents Chery’s first fully electric vehicle sold in South Africa. The company aims to make EVs accessible to a broader audience.
The QQ3, a 5-door electric hatchback, was unveiled in China in late 2025. It features a single rear-mounted electric motor that produces 58kW. Battery options for the Q range from 29.5kWh to 41.3kWh, providing a driving range of 310km to 420km.
Chery plans to showcase the Q at Auto China 2026 in Beijing. The company views this model as an important part of its future lineup.
Chery has positioned the Q to compete with models like the Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf—currently among the cheapest EVs in South Africa.
Chery stated, “As a fully electric vehicle, the Q also reflects Chery’s growing focus on electrification in South Africa, offering customers an accessible entry point into new energy vehicles.” This aligns with their strategy to expand their presence in the EV market.
The exact pricing of the Q remains unclear due to taxes and import duties. However, it is expected to be one of the most affordable options available.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding full specifications for the Q model. Chery has not yet released comprehensive information about features or pricing.
Currently, Chery offers hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of its Tiggo models. The introduction of the Q marks a significant shift toward fully electric vehicles.
The original QQ series launched in 2003 as urban hatchbacks with petrol engines. Chery relaunched this brand in 2021 with an emphasis on compact EVs designed for East Asian markets.
