Alex Zanardi, a celebrated figure in both motorsport and Paralympic sports, has passed away at the age of 59. He was a former Formula 1 driver and two-time CART champion. Zanardi’s legacy includes transforming the perception of disability in Italy.

In June 2020, Zanardi suffered another serious accident while riding his handbike. He faced significant recovery challenges after that incident. Reports indicate it took him 18 months to return home after the accident.

His family released a statement saying, “Alex fell asleep peacefully, surrounded by the affection of his loved ones.” Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s Prime Minister, remarked that “Italy has lost a great champion and an extraordinary man.”
