Weather Update for Durban: Severe Storms on the Horizon
The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms across most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, including Durban, on Monday and Tuesday. This warning indicates that residents should prepare for severe weather conditions.
According to Saws, the thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail. The warning specifically excludes the north-east of the province on Monday and the extreme south on Tuesday. A more severe Yellow Level 4 warning has also been issued for the extreme southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, where intense storms could lead to significant flooding and damage to infrastructure.
Impact on Local Events
The weather may have slightly affected the proceedings during the four-day Jonsson Workwear Durban Open over the weekend. Despite the weather conditions, local golfer Oliver Bekker emerged victorious, finishing with a total score of 200 (65, 68, 67). This victory marks his second win on the HotelPlanner Tour and follows a recent triumph on the PGA Tour of Australasia. Bekker dedicated his win to his late friend, emphasizing the importance of cherishing special moments.
The eThekwini Municipality noted that the tournament positively impacted the local economy by boosting tourism, hospitality, and small business activity. It also provided youth development opportunities by exposing young local golfers to professional competition.
What’s Next?
Residents are advised to stay indoors during the storms and avoid traveling on low-lying roads and bridges. The expected severe weather may lead to localised flooding, minor accidents, and potential injuries from flying debris. As the storms approach, it is crucial for the community to remain vigilant and prepared for any disruptions.
