Before the recent severe thunderstorm, Durban was experiencing relatively stable weather conditions. However, expectations shifted dramatically as a massive rainstorm began to batter parts of the city, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
The decisive moment came when torrential rain triggered widespread flooding, damaging homes, submerging roads, and uprooting trees. Areas such as Mariannhill, Shallcross, Chatsworth, Reservoir Hills, and Westville were particularly hard-hit.
In response to the devastation, KZN Human Settlements spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya announced that they are collaborating with the eThekwini Municipality to assess the damage and provide necessary support to affected residents.
As the storm continued, the South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 2 impact-based warning for severe thunderstorms, indicating that localized damage to infrastructure, settlements, property, vehicles, livelihood, and livestock was expected in the affected areas.
In addition, a level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms was issued for the North West and Free State provinces, highlighting the widespread nature of the storm’s impact. Severe thunderstorms with strong damaging winds, hail, excessive lightning, and heavy downpours were anticipated.
The forecast for April 7, 2026, indicates a minimum temperature of 20°C and a maximum of 23°C in Durban, while Pretoria and Johannesburg are expected to experience similar temperatures. These conditions may further complicate recovery efforts in the aftermath of the storm.
Ndabezinhle Sibiya emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “There is a team that was appointed by Minister of Human Settlements Thembi Simelane, together with the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, to do a quick intervention following assessments of any area that is hit by prolonged rainfall or any form of disaster.”
As local authorities work to assess the damage and implement recovery measures, the full extent of the storm’s impact remains to be seen. Details remain unconfirmed.
