“It is with great sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Steven Gruzd, Head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme at SAIIA,” stated the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) following the tragic news of Gruzd’s death.
Gruzd was reported missing on March 27, 2026, at around 6:30 p.m., after being kidnapped in Johannesburg. Authorities confirmed that he was found dead two days later, on March 29, 2026, following a coordinated search operation.
Five individuals have been arrested in connection with his kidnapping and murder, which has been described by South African authorities as an “express kidnapping.” The investigation is ongoing, with no links to terrorist organizations found among the suspects.
The Community Security Organization clarified that there were no indications Gruzd was targeted for being Jewish, stating, “The incident was being investigated as a criminal situation and not as an antisemitic event, with no clear patterns showing that Gruzd was targeted for being Jewish.”
Gruzd was a well-respected figure in South Africa’s public and academic spheres, known for his unwavering dedication to his work and commitment to the policy community in Africa. His contributions extended beyond academia; he was also a journalist with the SA Jewish Report and Radio Chai 101.9 FM.
Authorities recovered Gruzd’s body after one of the suspects led them to the location following their arrest. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
His death has been deeply mourned by colleagues and friends, with the SAIIA expressing, “An integral part of the Institute, Steve was known for his brilliant mind, his deep camaraderie, and his gentle spirit. We will miss him greatly.”
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are focusing on understanding the motives behind the kidnapping and ensuring justice for Gruzd and his family.
