What Happened
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has revealed significant corruption within South Africa’s immigration system, describing it as a “marketplace” where permits and visas were allegedly sold to the highest bidder. Acting SIU head Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho reported that corrupt officials in the Department of Home Affairs received approximately R16.3 million in bribes. The investigation, initiated after a whistleblower tip-off in May 2024, implicated several foreign nationals, including self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and Nigerian rapper Prince Daniel Obioma, known as 3GAR.
Why It Matters
This investigation highlights severe vulnerabilities in South Africa’s immigration system, which has reportedly cost the state over R180 million. The SIU’s findings suggest that the integrity of the Department of Home Affairs has been compromised, with officials exploiting their positions for personal gain. The agency has recommended that the department vet all employees to address these vulnerabilities and restore public trust.
What’s Next
The SIU has submitted an interim report to President Cyril Ramaphosa, outlining the outcomes of the investigation authorized under Proclamation 154 of 2024. Further actions may include legal proceedings against implicated officials and foreign nationals, as well as systemic reforms within the Department of Home Affairs to prevent future corruption.
