“Solomon Mahlangu never sold our revolution. He stood in the gallows firm. He stood there like a soldier,” stated Fikile Mbalula during a recent commemoration event held at Mamelodi West Cemetery, Johannesburg, marking the 47th anniversary of Mahlangu’s execution.
Mahlangu, a prominent anti-apartheid activist, was executed by the apartheid state on April 6, 1979, at the age of just 22. His conviction stemmed from his involvement in the Goch Street killings, which resulted in the deaths of Rupert Kessner and Kenneth Wolfendale.
The African National Congress (ANC) organized the memorial, which included a graveside ceremony and a symbolic walk retracing Mahlangu’s final journey to the gallows. Mbalula emphasized the importance of remembering Mahlangu’s sacrifice, stating, “Every act of corruption committed under the ANC’s banner is a betrayal of Solomon Mahlangu.”
During the event, Mbalula posed a profound question: “The question before us is not whether Mahlangu’s sacrifice was worth it. The question is whether we are worthy of it.” This reflection highlights the ongoing struggle for justice and integrity within the ANC and broader South African society.
Mahlangu’s family continues to pursue justice decades after his execution, arguing that his trial was unjust and that he was wrongfully convicted under the doctrine of common purpose.
As the ANC commemorates this significant date, the legacy of Solomon Mahlangu remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in the fight against apartheid and the ongoing challenges faced in achieving true justice and equality in South Africa.
“I salute not only the ANC but all the liberation forces in our country and all South Africans that grew up looking up to the example of Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu,” remarked Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, further underscoring the impact of Mahlangu’s life and sacrifice.
The commemoration serves not only as a tribute to Mahlangu but also as a call to action for current and future generations to uphold the values for which he fought.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further developments in the pursuit of justice for Mahlangu’s case, but the ANC’s commitment to honoring his legacy continues to resonate within the community.
