What the data shows
The central question surrounding the upcoming SASSA grant payment dates is when beneficiaries can expect to receive their funds for April 2026. While SASSA has not yet confirmed these dates, they typically pay out grants over three consecutive days in the first or second week of each month. The expected payment dates for April 2026 are the Older Persons Grant on April 2, the Disability Grant on April 3, and other grants on April 6.
Currently, SASSA administers over 19 million grant payments, a significant responsibility that underscores the importance of timely and accurate disbursements. The last officially published payment schedule covered the period from 2025 through to March 2026, leaving beneficiaries in anticipation of the next announcement.
Andile Tshona, a spokesperson for SASSA, reassured beneficiaries by stating, “The fact that we have not yet published them should not alarm our eligible beneficiaries as they will receive their grants as per usual.” This statement aims to alleviate concerns regarding the delay in confirming the payment dates.
In addition to the payment dates, there are notable changes to the grant amounts that will take effect in April 2026. The Old Age Grant is set to increase from R2,315 to R2,400, while the Disability Grant will also rise to R2,400. These adjustments reflect SASSA’s ongoing efforts to support vulnerable populations.
Furthermore, the Social Relief of Distress Grant, currently at R370, will continue to be issued individually after each application is verified. This process is crucial for ensuring that assistance reaches those who truly need it.
The social grant review process has been highlighted as an important measure to safeguard the integrity of the social assistance program. SASSA CEO Themba Matlou emphasized, “The social grant review process is an important step not only to safeguard the integrity of the social assistance programme but also to ensure that public funds are directed to those who need them most.” This initiative is expected to save R44 million monthly, contributing to annual savings of R0.5 billion.
Despite the proposed dates and increases in grant amounts, uncertainties remain. The exact payment dates for April 2026 have not been officially confirmed, and the approval process by the National Treasury for the proposed payment dates is still pending. As Tshona noted, “For now, we are still finalising a few things with National Treasury, then the dates will be made public.” Details remain unconfirmed.
