National Consumer Commission Investigates Sanitary Pads for Harmful Chemicals

What Happened

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has initiated an inquiry following a study by the University of the Free State, which revealed that several popular brands of sanitary pads and liners may contain harmful endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). These findings have raised significant concerns regarding the safety of these products, which are used by millions of South African women and girls each month.

Why It Matters

The study indicated that every tested sanitary pad and pantyliner contained at least two EDCs, which have been linked to serious health issues, including hormonal imbalances, infertility, endometriosis, and certain cancers. Acting NCC commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu emphasized the urgency of the investigation, stating that the findings warrant immediate regulatory scrutiny to protect consumer safety.

What’s Next

The NCC will investigate the compliance of several suppliers, including Kimberly-Clark (Kotex), Procter & Gamble (Always), and Johnson & Johnson (Stay Free), among others. If found non-compliant with the Consumer Protection Act, these brands could face mass recalls. The investigation will also allow the affected suppliers to respond to the concerns raised before any determinations are made.
