What Happened
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has initiated an inquiry following a study by the University of the Free State that revealed potentially harmful chemicals in various brands of sanitary pads and liners. The study found that all tested products contained at least two endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), raising significant health concerns.
Why It Matters
Millions of South African women and girls rely on these products monthly, and the presence of EDCs has been linked to serious health issues, including hormonal imbalances, infertility, endometriosis, and certain cancers. Acting NCC commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu emphasized the urgency of the investigation, stating that the findings warrant immediate regulatory scrutiny.
What’s Next
The NCC will investigate several major suppliers, including Kimberly-Clark (Kotex), Procter & Gamble (Always), and Johnson & Johnson (Stay Free), among others. The investigation will assess compliance with the Consumer Protection Act, which mandates that consumers receive goods that are safe and free from defects. If non-compliance is found, mass recalls may be initiated.
