What actions are being taken against Roblox in the Philippines and Indonesia? Several telecommunications companies in the Philippines are prepared to implement a ban on Roblox if ordered by the government, following concerns over illegal activities on the platform.
The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has issued an ultimatum to Roblox, demanding that the company coordinate with the government regarding these issues. CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Aboy Paraiso stated, “Kaya binigyan na lang namin sila ng 15 days to reach out to the government, the DICT and the CICC in particular, to discuss why we shouldn’t restrict their platform in the Philippine jurisdiction.” This ultimatum gives Roblox 15 days to respond.
In Indonesia, Roblox is also facing scrutiny. The Communications and Digital Minister announced that deactivations of high-risk social media accounts for users under 16 will take effect on March 28. Roblox is among the platforms identified as high-risk by Indonesia’s Communications and Digital Ministry.
To address these concerns, Roblox plans to introduce additional content and communication controls for players under the age of 16 in Indonesia. Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, remarked, “This week, we announced that in order to address regional requirements in Indonesia, we will soon introduce additional controls on content and communication for players under the age of 16 years old in Indonesia.” However, details about these additional controls remain unconfirmed.
Senator Risa Hontiveros has also called for a probe into Roblox due to the illegal activities reported on the platform. The situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of minors online and the responsibilities of digital platforms.
The CICC has previously met with telecommunications companies to discuss the risks posed to minors on Roblox, indicating a growing awareness and urgency surrounding this issue.
As these developments unfold, the future of Roblox in both the Philippines and Indonesia remains uncertain, with potential implications for its user base and operational practices in these regions.
