Rachel Matjeng, a senior official within the South African Police Service (SAPS) and head of Quality Management in SAPS Crime Record and Crime Scene Management, is currently embroiled in a significant corruption investigation. The inquiry is centered around a R360 million tender awarded in June 2024 to Medicare24 Tshwane District, a company that has been criticized for lacking a valid license and failing to meet full compliance with the tender requirements.
The investigation into this tender began in 2024, focusing on allegations of fraud and corruption. Matjeng was reportedly in an ‘on-and-off’ romantic relationship with Cat Matlala, who is also implicated in the case. Matlala is linked to the tender awarded to Medicare24, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
As of now, there are 14 individuals facing charges, including Matlala and 12 police officials. The suspects are accused of corruption, fraud, and violations of the Public Finance Management Act. The National Prosecuting Authority and the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption are leading the probe, which aims to ensure accountability among those involved.
Kaizer Kganyago, a spokesperson for the Investigating Directorate, stated, “We have all the evidence, and we are court-ready.” This statement underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the preparedness of the authorities to take legal action.
Nomonde Mnukwa, another official involved in the investigation, emphasized the importance of these arrests, saying, “These arrests send a clear and necessary message that no individual, including those entrusted with enforcing the law, is above scrutiny or beyond the reach of law enforcement.” This reflects a broader commitment to tackling corruption within law enforcement agencies.
As the investigation unfolds, observers are closely monitoring the developments, particularly regarding the implications for SAPS and the integrity of public procurement processes. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the next steps in the legal proceedings against the accused parties.
