“It took us 10 years to make a sneaker this simple, as simple as can be and no simpler,” Nike stated as they unveiled the upcoming release of the Tom Sachs x Nike General Purpose shoe, named ‘Bricolage’. The shoe will be available for purchase at a price of $110, marking a significant addition to Nike’s product line.
In addition to the new release, Nike is also resurrecting the original Moon Shoe, a historic model first created in the 1950s by Bill Bowerman. This shoe has a storied past, having been used in the 1972 US Track & Field Olympic Trials, and a pair of original Moon Shoes sold for nearly half a million dollars at auction in 2019.
The announcement comes amidst significant changes within Nike’s operational structure. Nike Studios, which was launched in 2023 in partnership with FitLab to provide boutique fitness experiences, has ceased operations across all locations. Brian Kirkbride, a spokesperson for Nike, remarked, “After careful consideration, the majority of the Nike Studios locations will be transitioning to FitLab’s owned portfolio of fitness brands.”
The final classes at the Irvine, California location were held on March 27, signaling the end of an era for Nike Studios. The transition to FitLab’s fitness brands is expected to streamline Nike’s offerings and focus on their core fitness initiatives.
As Nike continues to innovate in the sneaker market with the release of the Tom Sachs x Nike General Purpose shoe, the brand also reflects on its legacy with the revival of the Moon Shoe. This dual approach highlights Nike’s commitment to both modern design and historical significance in athletic footwear.
With these developments, Nike is poised to maintain its influential position in the sports and fashion industries. The upcoming release of the Bricolage shoe and the return of the OG Moon Shoe are anticipated to attract significant attention from consumers and collectors alike.
