New Study Reveals Multivitamin Use Slows Biological Aging
A recent study has found that taking a daily multivitamin for two years can slow biological aging by approximately four months. This research, which analyzed DNA methylation data from blood samples of 958 participants with an average age of 70, was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
The study involved participants being divided into four groups: one group received both a multivitamin and cocoa extract, another group received a multivitamin placebo and cocoa extract, a third group received cocoa extract and a multivitamin placebo, while the final group was given two placebos. The results indicated that the multivitamin group showed statistically significant slowing in two epigenetic clocks predictive of mortality.
Researchers noted that the effects of the multivitamin appeared to be more pronounced for participants who were biologically older than their actual age at the start of the study. This finding raises intriguing questions about the potential benefits of multivitamins, particularly for older adults.
Howard Sesso, one of the researchers, remarked, “There is a lot of interest today in identifying ways to not just live longer, but to live better.” This sentiment reflects a growing trend in health and wellness, where individuals are seeking not only longevity but also improved quality of life.
However, the study also highlighted that the cocoa extract did not slow biological aging for any of the five clocks analyzed. This suggests that while multivitamins may have some positive effects, other supplements may not provide the same benefits.
Despite the promising results, the researchers emphasized that further work is needed to explore whether the modest results seen for multivitamins relate to meaningful clinical benefits. As one researcher noted, “Ultimately, it is critical to determine the clinical relevance of our findings.” Details remain unconfirmed regarding who specifically benefits from taking multivitamins and how.
Experts have varied opinions on the use of multivitamins. Dr. Marco Di Antonio stated, “Taking multivitamins daily will be pointless if there is not a healthy lifestyle associated with it.” This highlights the importance of a holistic approach to health, where diet and lifestyle choices play a crucial role.
Conversely, Dr. Pilar Guallar Castillón advised against multivitamin use, saying, “My personal advice is to stop taking multivitamins, whether in pill or gummy form.” This underscores the ongoing debate within the medical community regarding the efficacy and necessity of multivitamins in daily health regimens.
