Masali Baduza is set to lead Bridgerton Season 5 as Michaela Stirling, a significant development for the popular Netflix series. This season will feature the first major lesbian love story, aiming to provide a realistic view of queer love onscreen.
Baduza, who is 30 years old and hails from KuGompo City in the Eastern Cape, first appeared in Bridgerton during Season 3 and had a recurring role in Season 4. The upcoming season will consist of eight episodes and is currently in production.
The storyline is set two years after the death of Francesca’s husband, John, with Hannah Dodd portraying Francesca Stirling. Baduza expressed her gratitude for being part of this momentous project, stating, “YOH YOU GUYS!!! I don’t even have enough words to express my gratitude for the past couple of days. I feel so lucky and proud to be able to share this momentous project at home (!!!) surrounded by family and friends. Enkosini from the bottom of my heart.”
Bridgerton’s showrunner, Jess Brownell, and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, are committed to delivering compelling narratives that resonate with diverse audiences. Baduza emphasized the importance of representation, saying, “What we really want to achieve is giving a realistic view of queer love onscreen and [giving the audience] a happily ever after. I think [this] is really important for a lot of the queer community to see onscreen, to know that it can work out, and that they deserve to also feel love.”
The series has gained immense popularity, with Seasons 1 to 4 currently streaming on Netflix. As the anticipation builds for Season 5, fans are eager to see how the new storyline unfolds and how Baduza’s character will contribute to the narrative.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact release date for Season 5, but the production is actively underway. The introduction of a lesbian love story marks a pivotal moment for the series, reflecting broader societal changes and the demand for authentic representation in media.
