LIV Golf South Africa is set to make history as the first LIV Golf tournament on the African continent, scheduled for March 16, 2026, at Steyn City, located just north of Johannesburg. This event represents the fifth different continent to host a LIV Golf tournament, furthering the league’s global expansion.
Among the notable participants are golf stars Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Louis Oosthuizen, Cameron Smith, and Talor Gooch. Phil Mickelson, in particular, will be making his first start of the LIV Golf season after a hiatus since August 2025 due to a family health matter. “I can’t wait to compete again and look forward to rejoining my teammates as soon as possible,” Mickelson stated.
The tournament is expected to attract significant crowds, rivaling the turnout seen at LIV Golf Adelaide. With a winner’s cheque of just under R70 million, the stakes are high for the competitors. Jon Rahm expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I’m excited. I’ve never been there,” while Bryson DeChambeau added, “It’s always been a dream of mine to play in South Africa.”
In addition to the tournament, there will be clinics for young players scheduled during the tournament week, aimed at fostering the next generation of golfers in the region. However, the long-term impact of the tournament on golf development in South Africa remains unclear, as one observer noted, “How the greater development of golf in South Africa will be affected by an isolated event is much less clear.” Details remain unconfirmed regarding the broader implications of this event.
