“This is a huge milestone in terms of Liberty Coal’s plans to achieve full operational capacity of 1 million tpm for the Optimum Colliery,” stated Hlayiseka Chauke, a key figure in the company. The recent recommissioning of a dragline at the colliery follows an extensive refurbishment program valued at nearly R500 million.
The Marion 8200 dragline, which features a boom measuring just over 100 meters, is designed to excavate coal to depths of nearly 80 meters. It has the capability to hoist approximately 135 tons of material in a single scoop, making it an essential asset for Liberty Coal’s surface mining operations.
The refurbishment included the installation of a state-of-the-art operator’s cab and advanced performance monitoring technology. Additionally, the project involved structural integrity assessments and non-destructive testing (NDT) to ensure the dragline’s reliability and safety.
Peter Nordin, involved in the project, emphasized the complexity of the refurbishment: “The project required careful engineering oversight, specialist technical expertise, and close coordination between maintenance, engineering, and operations teams.” This collaboration between Liberty Coal’s in-house teams and specialist contractors was crucial for the successful completion of the refurbishment.
The dragline had previously suffered from years of neglect and vandalism, making this refurbishment a significant turnaround for the equipment. With the dragline now operational, Liberty Coal is poised to enhance its mining efficiency.
Chauke further remarked, “Our goal is to mine efficiently to ensure the business is sustainable and the jobs created at the mine are also sustainable.” This focus on sustainability aligns with the company’s broader objectives in the coal industry.
In addition to the dragline refurbishment, Liberty Coal is also engaging the community with initiatives such as the Easter WonderMaze, which offers a total prize value of R50,000, including a grand prize draw of R15,000 in Liberty Promenade gift cards.
As Liberty Coal moves forward, the company aims to achieve full operational capacity, which is expected to have positive implications for both the local economy and employment in the region.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the timeline for reaching the targeted operational capacity, but the recommissioning of the dragline marks a significant step in the right direction.
