Kishene Chetty testifies before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee
“I honestly submit. It is my view that we are about to seriously prejudice Mr Chetty whether he realizes or not,” stated DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach during the testimony of businessman Kishene Chetty before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee. The committee is investigating allegations of corruption and political interference in the South African justice system.
Chetty, who is currently embroiled in several pending criminal cases related to theft, corruption, and money laundering, faced scrutiny regarding the potential impact of his testimony on these cases. He is accused of fraud, corruption, forgery, and theft linked to the misuse of funds from irregular PPE contracts valued at approximately R8 million.
In addition to the PPE allegations, Chetty is also facing charges related to a R56 million police vehicle branding contract, which involves fraud, money laundering, and racketeering. Furthermore, he has separate charges of fraud and tax evasion involving nearly R14 million from the South African Revenue Service.
During the proceedings, ANC MP Xola Nqola expressed concerns, saying, “It’s a detriment, a legal detriment to Mr Chetty himself to come and answer here.” This highlights the precarious position Chetty finds himself in as he navigates both his testimony and his legal challenges.
The situation escalated when the DA walked out of the committee meeting, citing concerns over the implications of Chetty’s testimony. The committee chairperson, however, ruled that proceedings must continue despite these concerns.
Chetty claimed during his testimony that authorities have abused their powers against him, stating, “When I do complain about them, I get arrested or they retaliate by using state machinery. I have proof of all of that.” This assertion adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigations.
The sub judice rule, which restricts members from engaging with matters currently before the courts, was also a point of contention during the meeting. Critics noted that the committee’s legal team failed to flag potential issues before inviting Chetty to testify.
As the testimony unfolded, it became clear that the implications of Chetty’s statements could have significant legal repercussions. The committee’s proceedings are expected to continue, with further developments anticipated in the coming weeks.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the legal ramifications for Chetty as he continues to face multiple allegations.
