The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) aims to be ready for elections by November 2026, as the current term for all municipal councils is set to end on November 2, 2026. Local government elections must be held within 90 days of the term’s expiry, prompting the IEC to initiate preparations for voter registration.
Upcoming Voter Registration Weekend
The first voter registration weekend is scheduled for June 20 and 21, 2026. During this period, all voting stations will be open to facilitate the registration process. Eligible voters will have until midnight on the day the election date is proclaimed to register to vote.
Recent Developments
Between November 2025 and March 2026, a total of 260,205 new online registrations have been recorded, indicating a growing interest in participation among the electorate. Additionally, voting district boundaries have been revised ahead of the elections due to ward limitation and population movement.
Statements from Officials
Sy Mamabolo, a representative from the IEC, stated, “The timing of this registration weekend aligns with the current planning assumption, namely, that the Commission must stand ready to administer elections whenever they are lawfully called.” He further added, “Following the completion of the process of voter registration, we anticipate the proclamation of the election date.”
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has also expressed its commitment to the voter registration process, stating, “This local government election is make-or-break for many small towns, municipalities and metros.” The party is actively campaigning across South Africa to assist in voter registration efforts.
