Renowned South African theatre figure Ian von Memerty has passed away at the age of 61.
His family shared the news in a post on Facebook.
"It is with great sorrow that we share the news of the passing of our cherished Ian von Memerty, who left us at the age of 61 in Johannesburg during the early hours of 23 February 2026."
"As a family, we have made every effort to support & honor him throughout his journey.
"We kindly request privacy and understanding as we navigate our own grief after losing someone we cherished deeply," the statement expressed.
Ian von Memerty, a proponent of “self-deliverance,” created a provocative video series titled Dying For A Better Life.
He articulated it in a Facebook post as "a series in which I aim to explore the truths, the decisions, the realities, and the duties associated with aging and mortality, along with my conviction that self-deliverance is a valid ethical choice."
Ian von Memerty, originally from Zimbabwe, gained fame as an actor and presenter, and he was also a skilled director and playwright, having crafted numerous scores and scripts for popular stage musicals and performances.
His career in television featured hosting roles on Muzik a la Carte alongside Sandy Ngema, as well as Strictly Come Dancing and SA’s Got Talent.
Ian von Memerty garnered 15 national theatre accolades and received nominations an additional 17 times.
