“I stand before you as your newly elected leader with one promise: however long I have the privilege of serving in this job, I will be dedicated to the mission of building a strong South Africa for everyone. Because South Africa is truly worth it.” These were the words of Geordin Hill-Lewis, who was elected as the new federal leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) on April 12, 2026, securing over 90% of the vote.
At 39 years old, Hill-Lewis, who currently serves as the mayor of Cape Town, succeeds John Steenhuisen, who stepped down after leading the party since 2019. Hill-Lewis’s election marks a significant moment for the DA, which confirmed that this congress was the largest in the party’s history.
In his acceptance speech, Hill-Lewis expressed confidence in the party’s potential, stating, “The question is whether the DA can lead the country. Whether we can become the largest party in national government. And, as your newly elected leader, my answer is a resounding yes.”
Hill-Lewis defeated Sibusiso Dyonase in the leadership election and laid out a four-point plan for his leadership, which emphasizes crime and policing as top priorities. He stated, “Bringing law and order to South Africa must be our top priority. Not one priority among many. The priority.”
Having previously served as Mmusi Maimane’s chief of staff when Maimane became DA leader in 2015, Hill-Lewis brings a wealth of experience to his new role. The DA aims to contest key metros in the upcoming local government elections, focusing on becoming the largest party in national government.
Hill-Lewis also highlighted the importance of principled opposition, asserting that “principled opposition is loyalty to the Constitution.” This statement underscores the DA’s commitment to uphold democratic values as it navigates the political landscape ahead.
As Hill-Lewis embarks on this new chapter, the DA’s next steps will be closely watched, particularly as they prepare for upcoming elections and seek to solidify their position within South Africa’s political framework.
