Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion, is reportedly considering quitting Formula 1 at the end of the 2026 season. This contemplation arises from his dissatisfaction with the energy management required by the new engines introduced under recent regulations. Verstappen, who made his F1 debut in 2015 at the age of 17, has expressed that enjoyment is crucial for success in sports.
Verstappen’s career has been marked by significant achievements, including becoming the youngest driver to win a race at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, when he was just 18 years and seven months old. His dominance in the sport was evident as he clinched four consecutive world championships from 2021 to 2024.
In a recent statement, Verstappen highlighted, “I see it like this: You hear it from a lot of sports people when you speak to them about how are you successful. It all starts with actually enjoying what you’re doing before you can actually commit to it 100%.” This sentiment underscores his current struggles with the sport.
Meanwhile, the FIA has announced a structured review of the new energy-saving regulations after the opening phase of the season, acknowledging the drastic differences in car speeds that have emerged. These changes have sparked concerns among drivers regarding safety and competitiveness.
Ollie Bearman, a fellow driver, recently avoided serious injury in a crash at the Japanese Grand Prix, further emphasizing the risks associated with the current regulations. Bearman commented on the situation, stating, “It’s a part of these new regulations that I guess we have to get used to, but also I felt like I wasn’t really given much space given the huge excess speed that I was carrying.”
Carlos Sainz also voiced concerns, stating, “As drivers, we have been extremely vocal that the problem is not only qualifying, it’s also racing, and we were warning this type of accident was always going to happen.” This reflects a growing frustration among drivers regarding the new rules.
As the season progresses, observers are keen to see how Verstappen’s situation develops. His potential departure from F1 would mark a significant shift in the sport, given his status and achievements. The coming months will likely reveal more about his future and the ongoing discussions surrounding F1 regulations.
