Mosiuoa Lekota, a prominent South African political figure and the first Premier of the Free State, died on March 4, 2026, at the age of 77. His death has triggered a series of legal proceedings regarding the management of his estate, particularly concerning the financial transactions made prior to his passing.
Following Lekota’s death, it was revealed that he and his wife, Cynthia Lekota, had been married in community of property since 1975 but had lived separately since 2010. They had four children together, one of whom had passed away nearly three decades ago.
Significant payments exceeding R1 million were made from Lekota’s account to Luzelle Adams between April 2, 2024, and February 12, 2026. Notably, R250,000 was transferred to Adams’ attorneys and R150,000 to her property account shortly after she became aware of the legal application on February 11, 2026.
Judge Anthony Millar, presiding over the case, determined that Lekota was of unsound mind and incapable of managing his affairs from the previous year until his death. This ruling led to the appointment of Kotane Lekota as curator responsible for managing his estate and financial affairs.
In a significant development, Judge Millar ordered that Lekota’s medical records be delivered in a sealed envelope, emphasizing the need for confidentiality regarding his health status. The judge also noted that Adams had exercised control over Lekota’s joint estate without the knowledge or consent of Cynthia Lekota.
The case has raised critical questions about the withdrawal of funds from Lekota’s account, particularly the emptying of his current account on February 12, which Judge Millar stated required explanation, yet none was provided.
Judge Millar remarked, “The death of Lekota could never have provided a respite for (Adv A) in having to account for her actions with regards to the joint estate.” This statement underscores the ongoing scrutiny of the financial dealings surrounding Lekota’s estate.
Furthermore, the judgment will be referred to several professional bodies, including the Legal Practice Council and the Johannesburg Society of Advocates, indicating the seriousness of the allegations and the potential implications for those involved.
As the legal proceedings continue, the situation remains fluid, with further developments expected in the coming weeks. The outcome will likely have significant implications for the management of Lekota’s estate and the parties involved.
Details remain unconfirmed.
