“The quality of Easter chocolate is simply worse than chocolate any other time of the year,” remarked a participant in a recent taste test that evaluated 29 different Easter egg varieties. This statement encapsulates the findings of the event held on April 1, 2026, in East Rand, South Africa, where chocolate enthusiasts gathered to assess the offerings of various brands.
The taste test featured well-known brands such as Ferrero Collection, Koko Black, Lindt, and Cadbury, among others. The standout performer was the Ferrero Collection Chocolate Wafer Eggs, which scored an impressive 9/10. These eggs, weighing 100g, retail for $9.30 and were praised for their rich flavor and texture.
Koko Black’s Milk Little Eggs followed closely with a score of 7.5/10. Priced at $19.99 for 150g, these eggs were noted for their creamy taste, although some participants felt they were slightly overpriced. Hugos Hazelnut Cream Mini Eggs also received a favorable score of 7/10, available at $4.49 for a 100g package.
Other brands, however, did not fare as well. Lindt Milk Chocolate Mini Eggs scored 8.5/10, while Kinder Bueno Eggs received an 8/10 rating. In contrast, Cadbury Dairy Milk Milk Chocolate Easter Eggs only managed a score of 6/10, and Dairy Fine Milk Chocolate Solid Eggs scored even lower at 5/10. The lowest-rated product was Health Lab’s Gooey Caramel Mylk Chocolate Half Eggs, which received a disappointing score of 1.5/10.
“I think this is better than bad,” one participant commented, reflecting the mixed reviews of the chocolate quality. Another participant expressed confusion over the variety of flavors and textures, stating, “How can chocolate be this confusing?” Such sentiments underscore the complexities of consumer preferences during the Easter season.
In addition to the taste test, the Craig View Veterinary Clinic has set a goal to collect 4000 Easter eggs for local charities. This initiative highlights the community spirit surrounding the holiday, as many organizations aim to spread joy through chocolate treats.
As Easter approaches, the commercial aspect of the holiday continues to grow, often overshadowing its religious significance. This trend has led to a wide array of chocolate options, catering to diverse consumer tastes and preferences. The results of the taste test may influence purchasing decisions as families prepare for the holiday.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the impact of these findings on future chocolate production, but the taste test has certainly sparked conversations about quality and consumer expectations in the Easter egg market.
