In a significant development in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, South Sudan defeated Djibouti 4-0 during their preliminary round clash held at the Juba National Stadium. The match took place behind closed doors as per CAF directives.
South Sudan’s performance was marked by strong individual contributions, particularly from Keer Majak, who not only scored once but also provided two assists. The scoring opened in the 31st minute when Teng Kuol found the back of the net, followed by Justine Bangasi’s goal just after halftime in the 49th minute.
Peter Manyang added to the tally in the 66th minute, and Keer Majak sealed the victory with his goal in the 81st minute, bringing the final score to 4-0. This result puts Djibouti in a challenging position as they prepare for the return leg.
The return match is scheduled to take place on March 29 in Juba, where Djibouti will need to overturn the significant deficit. The stakes are high, as only six teams will advance to join 42 other Member Associations of CAF in the Group Phase of qualification for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations PAMOJA 2027.
On the same day, another match saw Seychelles and Lesotho play to a goalless draw, highlighting the competitive nature of the qualifiers.
As the teams look ahead, South Sudan will aim to maintain their momentum, while Djibouti faces a daunting task to recover from this heavy defeat. The outcome of the return leg will be crucial for both teams as they vie for a spot in the prestigious tournament.
