The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) recently announced a recall of specific batches of Citro Soda, a product commonly used to relieve symptoms of acid-related digestive issues and urinary tract conditions. This decision marks a significant shift from prior expectations, where the product was considered safe for consumer use.
The recall, which affects only batches produced at the Clayville facility of Adcock Ingram, was initiated following a whistleblower notification that prompted an inspection. During this inspection, SAHPRA discovered critical deficiencies at the manufacturing facility, including the presence of metal fragments and unknown black particles in the recalled products.
SAHPRA has classified this as a Class II recall, indicating that the affected products may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects. Specifically, the recall applies to Citro Soda products with batch numbers starting with the letter ‘C’. Consumers are urged to be vigilant and report any defects they encounter with health products sold in the country.
Lebohang Mazibuko, a spokesperson for SAHPRA, stated, “We found the presence of metal fragments from the manufacturer equipment and some unknown black particles from those manufacturing equipment.” This alarming finding has raised concerns about the safety standards at the Clayville plant.
In response to the situation, Mokgadi Daphney Fafudi emphasized, “This is a Class 2, Type A recall, which means the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects.” This classification underscores the seriousness of the contamination risk associated with the affected batches.
SAHPRA has confirmed that all other batches manufactured outside of Clayville are safe for use, providing some reassurance to consumers who rely on Citro Soda for their health needs. However, the regulatory body will continue to monitor the recall process until all affected batches are removed from circulation.
Dr. Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela urged the public to report any quality defects they encounter, stating, “We would like to urge the public that as part of the country, as citizens of the country and as those who consume these products, please do alert us of any quality defects that you encounter, with any health product available in the country.” This call to action highlights the importance of consumer vigilance in maintaining product safety.
As the recall unfolds, details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the contamination and its potential impact on consumers. The situation serves as a reminder of the critical role regulatory bodies play in ensuring the safety of health products available to the public.
