The Blitzboks clinched a thrilling victory against Fiji with a score of 10-7 in the final held in New York on March 15, 2026. This match marked the first-ever tournament final in New York, adding a significant milestone to the Blitzboks’ history.
In the semi-final, the Blitzboks showcased their strength by defeating Argentina 14-5, with Impi Visser, Sebastiaan Jobb, and Selvyn Davids contributing to the team’s success. Tristan Leyds converted both tries in that match, demonstrating the team’s cohesive effort.
This season has been remarkable for the Blitzboks, who have now won four out of six tournaments in the HSBC SVNS Series. Their victories earlier in Cape Town, Perth, and Vancouver have solidified their position as the current 2025/2026 World Series winners.
Impi Visser celebrated a personal milestone by playing in his 50th tournament during the final against Fiji. His performance, along with the team’s defensive strategy, was crucial in securing the win.
Fiji managed to score one try in the final, which was converted by Terio Veilawa, but it was not enough to overcome the Blitzboks’ lead. The defensive effort from the Blitzboks was highlighted by their captain, Philip Snyman, who praised the team’s commitment from the first minute to the last play.
Selvyn Davids expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “What a performance! We stuck to our guns because we knew Fiji were going to be physical, but thankfully we came out on top.” Impi Visser echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the hard work that led to their victory.
Looking ahead, the Blitzboks will compete in three more tournaments for the World Championship, with upcoming events scheduled in Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux. Davids noted, “The season is not over, but we can allow ourselves to enjoy this one, and when we come back we start fresh with the World Championships our focus.”
The Blitzboks’ victory in New York not only adds to their accolades but also sets a positive tone as they prepare for the remaining challenges in the season.
