In addition to the suspended sentence, Mokwena was fined 50,000 Algerian dinars (just under R6,500). He stated, “We were on our way to Istanbul, and there was I and three other staff members,” indicating that he was traveling with colleagues at the time of his arrest.
Despite the legal troubles, Mokwena has been confirmed as the new coach of Al-Ittihad Tripoli, with his release clause reportedly triggered by the club. He is set to earn a monthly salary of R1.4 million, a significant financial incentive for his move.

The South African embassy was made aware of Mokwena’s detention, and he expressed confusion about the currency regulations in Algeria, stating, “I don’t know if you can steal your salary or money that you’ve worked very, very hard for for nine months; you’ve worked very, very hard for it, you know.”
According to Tebogo Malatji, a legal expert, “If you have landed and you haven’t declared currency, authorities will detain you so they can interrogate the source of the funds, the same as when you leave.” He further noted that “Currency is considered part of capital assets,” highlighting the seriousness of the regulations Mokwena inadvertently violated.
