What implications does Rulani Mokwena’s arrest have for his career and the football community? Mokwena was arrested by Algerian authorities for violating currency regulations, which has resulted in his departure from MC Alger and subsequent appointment as the new coach of Al-Ittihad Tripoli.
Mokwena received a suspended two-month prison sentence after being found guilty of possessing undeclared foreign currency. He was detained at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers while attempting to leave the country with US $15,000 (approximately R250,000) in cash.
In addition to the suspended sentence, Mokwena was fined 50,000 Algerian dinars (just under R6,500). He stated, “We were on our way to Istanbul, and there was I and three other staff members,” indicating that he was traveling with colleagues at the time of his arrest.
Despite the legal troubles, Mokwena has been confirmed as the new coach of Al-Ittihad Tripoli, with his release clause reportedly triggered by the club. He is set to earn a monthly salary of R1.4 million, a significant financial incentive for his move.
In his new role, Mokwena has already begun assembling a backroom staff that includes Sinethemba Badela, Wendell Robinson, Sbu Makitla, and Thabiso Moshane. This move marks a new chapter in his coaching career after his previous stints at Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
The South African embassy was made aware of Mokwena’s detention, and he expressed confusion about the currency regulations in Algeria, stating, “I don’t know if you can steal your salary or money that you’ve worked very, very hard for for nine months; you’ve worked very, very hard for it, you know.”
According to Tebogo Malatji, a legal expert, “If you have landed and you haven’t declared currency, authorities will detain you so they can interrogate the source of the funds, the same as when you leave.” He further noted that “Currency is considered part of capital assets,” highlighting the seriousness of the regulations Mokwena inadvertently violated.
As Mokwena transitions to his new role at Al-Ittihad Tripoli, the football community will be watching closely to see how he navigates the aftermath of this incident and what it means for his coaching career moving forward.
