Ali Larijani, a prominent Iranian political figure and head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was reportedly killed by Israel in an airstrike near Tehran. This claim was made by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who stated that Larijani was targeted in an overnight strike. The ongoing conflict in the region has resulted in approximately 1,300 deaths since February 28.
Lariijani was last seen publicly during the al-Quds Day rally in Tehran, where he appealed to Muslim-majority nations to support Iran against the perceived threats from the US and Israel. He has been a significant player in Iran’s nuclear negotiations with Western powers and previously served as the Iranian speaker of the parliament.
The Israeli military described Larijani as ‘the de facto leader’ of the Iranian regime, underscoring his influence within the government. In addition to Larijani, the Israeli military also claimed responsibility for the death of Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij militia.
In a note commemorating 84 Iranian sailors killed in a US attack, Larijani emphasized the importance of unity among Islamic nations, questioning the stance of certain governments that do not support Iran. “Is the stance of certain Islamic governments not at odds with the Prophet [Mohammad]’s saying: ’Whoever hears a man calling out, ‘O Muslims!’ and fails to answer him is not a Muslim?’” he stated.
Larijani’s remarks reflect the heightened tensions in the region, where military actions have been described as acts of desperation by Iranian leaders. “These attacks are out of fear, out of desperation. One who is strong wouldn’t bomb demonstrations at all. It’s clear that it has failed,” Larijani remarked.
Despite the claims regarding his death, the Iranian government has yet to confirm the news, leaving the status of Larijani unclear. Observers are closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds, particularly given Larijani’s significant role in Iranian politics and security matters.
Details remain unconfirmed.
