Significant Arrest in Retail Theft Case
Peet Viljoen and his partner, Melany Viljoen, were arrested in Boca Raton, Florida, for retail theft, with allegations that they stole over $5,300 worth of goods from Publix stores. This incident marks a serious legal challenge for the couple, who are already facing a troubled past.
The couple is linked to a six-month retail theft spree that involved ticket-switching tactics. Surveillance footage revealed that during 52 transactions, a total of 392 items were not scanned, indicating a systematic approach to their alleged theft.
According to reports, Peet Viljoen allegedly distracted store employees while Melany scanned groceries, a method that appears to have been part of their strategy to evade detection.
Melany Viljoen stated, “I was in ‘survival mode’ because I could not legally work in the US due to visa issues,” suggesting that their actions may have been driven by desperation. Peet Viljoen, on the other hand, denied any wrongdoing, claiming that there was no ticket-switching or intentional theft involved.
The couple has been booked into the Main Detention Center in West Palm Beach, facing charges of aggravated grand retail theft under Florida law. They were granted a bond of $10,000 each, allowing for their temporary release.
Adding to their legal woes, the couple previously faced significant challenges in South Africa related to their nail franchise operations. A judge had ordered them to cease using the Tammy Taylor trademark and repay a substantial amount of R600,000.
Peet Viljoen, aged 57, and Melany Viljoen, aged 39, relocated to the United States amidst these ongoing legal troubles and investigations. Their controversial remarks on social media regarding South Africa have also drawn attention.
As the case unfolds, further details remain unconfirmed, and the couple’s future remains uncertain as they navigate the legal system in Florida.
