Introduction of Smart ID Card Applications
In a significant development for identity verification in South Africa, Capitec has launched its first in-branch smart ID self-service terminals (SSTs) in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). This initiative, which began to take shape in August 2025, aims to enhance access to smart ID card applications, particularly for the millions of South Africans lacking proper identification.
Launch and Implementation
The service officially went live on March 9, 2026, at the Eyethu Orange Farm Mall in Orange Farm, Gauteng. This marks a pivotal moment in the collaboration between Capitec and the DHA, as it allows clients to apply for Smart IDs at self-service terminals without the need for prior booking. The application process is designed to be efficient, taking less than five minutes and fully integrated with DHA systems.
Accessibility and Fees
Clients can complete their applications for a fee of R150, which includes R140 for the DHA and R10 as a Capitec service fee. This pricing structure aims to make the process more affordable and accessible, especially for the estimated 4.4 million South Africans over the age of 16 who currently do not possess either a green ID book or a Smart ID card.
Technological Advancements
Capitec’s self-service terminals are notable for being the first to operate independently of stationed Home Affairs officials in branches. This innovation is powered by Capitec’s proprietary biometric technology, allowing applications to be completed without any paperwork. Such advancements are expected to significantly reduce travel distances and waiting times for individuals seeking identity documents.
Current State of ID Processing
As of now, the Department of Home Affairs operates 349 offices nationwide, with 190 of these locations capable of processing Smart ID applications. The introduction of Capitec’s SSTs is expected to alleviate some of the pressure on these offices, streamlining the application process for many South Africans.
Leon Schreiber, a representative from the DHA, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This partnership with Capitec marks a historic step in transforming how South Africans access their identity documents.” Graham Lee from Capitec added, “By democratising access to essential identity documents, we support the government’s mandate for socio-economic transformation.” The ability to obtain an ID is seen as a catalyst for economic participation, further underscoring the significance of this initiative.
Future Expansion Plans
Looking ahead, Capitec plans to expand the availability of these self-service terminals to 100 locations by mid-2026. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to phase out green ID books in South Africa, replacing them with smart ID cards, thereby modernizing the country’s identification system.
The launch of smart ID card applications through Capitec’s self-service terminals represents a crucial step towards improving access to identity documents in South Africa. As the initiative continues to roll out, it holds the potential to transform the landscape of identity verification and support socio-economic growth across the nation.
