Casey Jarvis narrowly misses DP World Tour record at Joburg Open
In a tightly contested finale at the Joburg Open, held at Houghton Golf Club in South Africa, Casey Jarvis finished tied for second, just one shot behind winner Dan Bradbury. This result prevented Jarvis from matching a notable DP World Tour record, as he aimed to become only the third player to win three consecutive events, joining the ranks of legends Sir Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros.
Bradbury secured his victory with a final score of 17 under par, while Jarvis and fellow competitor Brandon Robinson-Thompson both finished at 16 under. Jarvis’s final round was marked by a score of 66, featuring six birdies and two bogeys, showcasing his strong performance throughout the tournament.
The Joburg Open, which offered a total prize purse of 20.5 million South African rand (approximately $1.22 million), saw Bradbury take home $209,000 for his win. Jarvis and Robinson-Thompson each earned $174,203 for their tied second-place finish, reflecting the competitive nature of the event.
Jarvis’s pursuit of a third consecutive title came on the heels of his previous victories at the Magical Kenya Open and the Investec South African Open Championship. Despite his strong showing, he narrowly missed a birdie putt on the final hole that could have forced a playoff, highlighting the thin margins that often define success in professional golf.
Dan Bradbury expressed his relief and excitement after the win, stating, “I thought I’d lost it on the front nine. I had so many chances and just didn’t take anything, but it feels really good to put it together on the back nine there.” He also acknowledged the impressive play of Jarvis and Robinson-Thompson, noting, “Casey and Brandon obviously played amazing – I saw their names on the leaderboard all the way around.”
As the tournament concluded, Hennie du Plessis finished in fourth place, three strokes behind Bradbury, further emphasizing the competitive field at this year’s Joburg Open. The event not only showcased emerging talents like Jarvis but also highlighted the ongoing excitement within the DP World Tour.
Looking ahead, the DP World Tour will take a week off before heading to China for the start of their ‘Asian Swing’, beginning with the Hainan Classic from March 19-22 at Mission Hills Resort Haikou. This upcoming series of events will provide players like Jarvis another opportunity to compete for titles and potentially set new records.
