Sandro’s Journey to Safety
Sandro, a 21-year-old tiger, is the last surviving member of the infamous ‘Train Tigers’ and has found refuge at the LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa. Rescued in March 2022 by the organization FOUR PAWS, Sandro was transported over 70 hours from San Luis, Argentina, where he had spent most of his life confined in a 75m² train carriage alongside three other tigers.
Born in 2004, Sandro faced numerous challenges, including impaired vision and arthritis in both elbows. His previous life in a circus left him with significant health issues, but since his rescue, he has received round-the-clock geriatric care tailored to his specific needs.
Care and Rehabilitation
At LIONSROCK, Sandro’s care includes a specialized diet, pain management, and regular medical observation. Sanctuary Manager Hildegard Pirker noted, “Sandro’s resilience is extraordinary. Despite everything he endured, he continues to thrive under our care.” This commitment to his well-being aims to provide him with a peaceful, dignified, and pain-free life.
Sadly, Sandro’s companions, Mafalda, Messi, and Gustavo, were diagnosed with severe kidney disease and have since passed away, with their deaths occurring between 2024 and 2025. This loss highlights the harsh realities faced by animals rescued from similar situations.
A Symbol of Trust
Despite his past, Sandro remains engaged and active. He often greets caretakers with a soft chuff, a friendly vocalization that signals trust. Pirker remarked, “These animals are so resilient. After they received special care and rehabilitation at LIONSROCK for a year now, they have become relaxed and have grown into their personalities.”
Sandro stands as a living testament to resilience and the importance of specialized sanctuary care. LIONSROCK reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that he lives a life shaped by compassion, expertise, and respect for his individual needs.
